Evil, evil internet trouble and a bit about life down here
I can't get online with my computer. At least not anywhere I've tried using it in Fayetteville. I am typing this at a PC at the library to which I cannot hook up any external storage media, so I can't share any pictures or post the fun stuff I had all typed up.

How I'm gonna solve this problem, I have no idea; I even went to a frickin' Starbucks when I was over in Beckley, but they now use a horrible system (run by At&t/T-mobile) that won't let you log into anything and charges you $6 an hour.

So I am not happy about that at all.

Aside from that, I've met a couple campground neighbors (including a guy called Ark who's been working the river since he was 14) and started getting to know some of the other folks I'll be working with all summer.

Pretty much everybody around here seems to drink beer practically all the time. Okay, that's a bit too much of a generalization, but there have already been several times I've been sitting in the video room and seen a co-worker come in with a beer in hand. It seems that the normal thing to do when you get off the river is grab a beer and go hang out in the bar upstairs for a little while. Then, if you're not too tired, you either stay there or go hunt down a party at one of the other raft companies.

I've also been told that I'll be asked regularly whether I smoke pot, simply because I'm a video boater and video boaters have a reputation for being high all the time (especially at work). That's not so much true anymore, but people still think it is -- especailly raft guides.

Speaking of guides, practically every raft guide I've talked with is bugging me to hop on a trip with them, since we don't have to pay for our runs. I'm planning on going for at least a couple Lower New trips and maybe a run on the Upper -- once I have my drytop again. It's still a bit too chilly to be out without one.

Backstory

When I applied to be a video boater, I had been whitewater kayaking a total of 10 times. I had practically no gear, and I hadn't been in a kayak in 8 months. They hired me anyway, probably because I have video experience.
This is a chronicle of my journey, beginning as a newbie who's still a bit scared of Class II+ rapids and finishing (hopefully) as a skilled video boater who can have fun in Class V water.
